Wow! I absolutely loved this read. The book was well-written; I was personally completely angry and enthralled at the same time. The modern conflicts in Izzy's life provided a small respite from the intensity of the rest of her and Clara's story.

An absolute incredible story that kept from hooked from the first sentence. Enjoyed the back-and-forth perspectives; the author did an astonishing job with telling this story. I felt the characters emotions and was hanging on every word - always hoping for the best for them!
Last chapter of the book falls a little short for me (which is why I deducted 0.25 stars), it was an expected ending for this character, but it felt a little rushed and I wished there would have been a little more development/details for the “after” part of her story.

So incredibly sad, and not even in a “good read” way. Left me feeling empty and horrible. I mean, it’s written well, but I would not recommend, because it leaves you feeling horrible at the end.

This was like reading two separate books, a historical fiction novel on the way those accused of mental illness were treated in the 1930s and a young adult novel. The historical fiction novel quickly went from being engrossing and fascinating to downright unbelievable (spoilers) and while yes, I believe that women were throw into institutions simply for being rebellious during this era, I stopped believing when her lover that came to rescue her was also thrown into the institution.

The young adult side was interesting to read but I am a fan of YA books. The big reveal wasn't a big reveal because of the intense foreshadowing. However, overall, I found this book compelling and suspenseful.
