This book was fine.
I feel like its got some unfair hate on its reviews that I don't understand... "there was no foreshadowing" HONEY if you didn't think THAT CHARATER was going to do something insane, THE WRITING ISN'T THE ISSUE...i called him pulling some crazy sh-t way before that....If you thought THAT CHARACTER was honest about the doll (if you read it you know)...THE PROBLEM ISN'T THE WRITING....there was foreshadowing of some of the big events, seems a lot of people missed it...
On to my actual thoughts, Yeah the 'romance' aspects were a little cheesy, even high school level cheesy when the first healing tub scene happened....but whatever, the action sequences and gladiator arena scenes WERE good. idc what anyone else says...they're graphic and brutal you can visualize our MMC's wounds and pain. You can visualize the surge of the crowd chanting BLOODGUARD! BLOODGUARD!
Spoiler on a side not, Mrs. Robson....I will NOT forgive you for Gunther, he was INNOCENT and i wanted to cry

Red Tower releases another half edited book with a great premise! (and i can't go after the author for this, sorry its been a PUBLISHER issues for RT since Fourth Wing took off the way it did) Heavenbreaker got the same treatment....Five broken blades...the games gods play....THEY ALL HAVE TWO THINGS IN COMMON...questionable editing allowed to bypass the process in favor of pretty edges....(again i won't fault the authors for this)

Also this is labeled as Old Erth #1...but I'm satisfied. I don't know if I want Old Erth #2...not because I wouldn't read it (I would) but because I think this book tied up all major plot points...with "the ending we wanted" anyway.

i was so excited to read this, it’s been on my TBR for months…. so imagine my disappointment to find out i actually just hated this book. i feel like this story had a lot of good ideas and just couldn’t execute them properly. i was bored from page one. i couldn’t get into it but unfortunately for me my brain won’t let me DNF. i also have a problem with the “epilogue” just being the last chapter. like an epilogue is supposed to be an extra conclusion, not just the last chapter. and honestly i feel like if there had been like 3 more chapters where they actually finish the story (it ends very abruptly and doesn’t show how the world becomes better for what they did or any insight into their lives after everything they went through) i would have been willing to give this another 1/2 star. but the story is just up in the air, and from what i understand this is technically a stand alone, so there won’t be any more story for these characters. like give SOME closure.

The way I had to rewatch Gladiator after this LOL. I loved this sm. Maeve is one of the best FMCs I have read in a while. This book had everything I was looking for -
action ✔️
comedy ✔️
high stakes ✔️
romance ✔️
shock value ✔️
(when I tell you I nearly through my book across the room around 65% 🥲). I loved how many types of beings and creatures were in this. I’m one of those people that hallucinate when I read so this one was fun - aka sorry to the ogres, I envisioned you all as Shrek.

Def recommend if you’re looking to envision Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix in another Gladiator story 😆

I was so bored almost start to finish. Idk if it was the writing..okay well it had to be the writing but idk what it was about the writing. The whole story just felt flat. The characters, the world, the pacing, everything, just blah blah blah.
