I don't know where to begin. Kuang is an excellent writer and creator of characters. I fell in love with Chen Kitay and his bond with Rin was the most moving aspect of the story. Rin's ending felt fitting, inevitable, and unsettling. It feels so cruel that Nezha is the only surviving character out of the dozen or so we came to love. He was so well written, but I wish more was done with his character ultimately. The third installment felt so very rushed and frustrating at times. I'll be thinking about this for a while.

Amen)

I liked this finale more than book 2 but neither book lived up to book 1 for me. I do think this series could have been a quartet, as so much happens in this final book and so many plot points could have been (and in other books would have been) the climax of this book. Another book would have given it more time to breath. This series deals with the realities of war beautifully and the sacrifices made as well as what can and cannot be returned from. Everyone warns about the ending and the series being devastating, but by time we got to it, I didn't see any other way it could have gone. The inevitabilities of war is exactly the point of this story.
