The first half of the book was very slowly paced. It was interesting to learn more about Lakewalker camp life and Dag’s family, but the plot of “dealing with frustrating family” was the back half of book 1, so it felt less fresh this time.
Around half way through the book the plot shifts and jolts both the malice plot and the Dag/Fawn relationship plot in interesting directions. I’m wondering if the last two books will have a similar odd pacing structure for the “malice” vs “relationship” sections, although now that the family conflict is simmered I am hoping that the “relationship” sections become more about broader Lakesiders/Farmer relationships.

not as good as the first one but still a good way to pass ten hours sitting alone in the dark.
On top of the physical setting and plot, this book is about the realities of interracial relationships- once you make a decision to be together, what do you do? How do you choose whose traditions will be followed? How do you navigate roles that you weren't raised to? How do you show respect for new family members, and how do you develop those relationships? What do you do when other people don't see your relationship the way that you do? At what point do you walk away?
As someone in an interracial relationship, I have NEVER read a book that deals with these issues as realistically, and I LOVE this series for that.
Looking forward to what comes next!

This book deals with them and his people (the indians, from the cowboys and Indians scenario).
I found the intolerance a bit tough to deal with, but its a crucial part of the story. Still it was impossible not to route for these wonderful characters.

This sequel of cross-generational romance in a fantasy world failed to hold my attention.

Much slower paced than the first book, but still very reflective and enveloping.
Same main characters as first one, but more of Dag's friends and family. And more of the Lakewalker magic, and the evil they are fighting. Still enjoying in - would not run out and buy the trilogy, but put in a request for #3 at the library.
