I love Mark Billingham and the Tom Thorne books, and this did not disappoint.
I need to catch up on some previous books as apparently A LOT has gone down, but as with all of them, it's perfectly easy to read as a stand alone book, with the history explained enough to understand, but not excessively for those who already know it.
Detective Tom Thorne is up against one seriously messed up individual... Well... Several. Nothing is what it seems, and there's mystery, intrigue, and dark humour to spare.

I hadn't read the previous books in the Thorne series but it didn't stop this from being an enjoyable read. Important events from the previous books are summarised in enough detail to cope but I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I had all the backstory information. I saw the end twist coming from fairly early on and found the "banter" between the main characters quite fake.
3 stars
Reading 2 out of 18 books definitely makes me miss out on a lot of details and background information. It's like walking into a party where everyone knows everyone and I am the new person.
The book was not bad but a bit slow at times and I felt that the personal vendetta could have been explained a bit more (for those like me).
Nevertheless, the ending was quite surprising and improved my overall take on the book.

Although this is book 18 in the series, it is my first Detective Inspector Tom Thorne book. There is a lot in this book that refers to things that were covered in earlier books in the series. I would recommend reading the books in order, as they build on the various relationships and characters. (I hadn't known this was part of a series when I chose to read the book).
Thorne is investigating a series of murders where the bodies are partially mutilated. The killings are being manipulated by someone Thorne knows from his past, Stuart Nicklin. The story also focuses on murderabilia, people who collect things that murderers used. YUCK! Recurring characters that appear are Thorne's friends, Phil Hendricks and Nicola Tanner, as well as his current lover, Melita Perera.
I will have to go back and read the earlier books in the series. I did enjoy some of the humor peppered throughout the book.

Absolutely loved it. I realise sometimes it’s good to have some time away (Mark Bellingham from the Thorne series) because when the next book arrives it’s like a gathering of old friends. This book did not disappoint and Phil Hendrix … what a man!

Entertaining plot, but unfortunately the final twist was predictable. The ending felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic.
I didn’t really like Thorne or how the female characters were written.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Author: Mark Billingham
Publisher: Atlantic Monthly Press

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Atlantic Monthly Press and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
Synopsis: In Nicola Tanner and Phil Hendricks, Thorne has good friends by his side. His love life is newly reformed by a promising relationship and he is happy in the job he has devoted his life to. As he sets off hunting the woman responsible for a series of grisly murders, Thorne has no way of knowing that he will be plunged into a nightmare from which he may never wake. A nightmare that has a name. Thorne’s past threatens to catch up with him and a ruinous secret is about to be revealed. If he wants to save himself and his friends, he will have to do the unthinkable. Tom Thorne finally has a lot to lose.
My Thoughts: This is a book in a series, however, I think it could be read alone, there is enough information to flow through the book without difficulty. This book had the best prologue and epilogue that I have seen in awhile. The characters are well developed with depth, intriguing, and fascinating. The author’s writing was complex on many levels, suspenseful, and kept me engaged from cover to cover. The plot was full of twists, some predictable, and some were not. I do not want to say too much as I do not want to spoil for anyone. This releases today and I highly recommend that you pick up.
