A good second episode in this series. It continues the world-building and the roles of supernatural (and one preternatural) in Victorian England.
Nice interludes between more serious or other intriguing reads. Still zany, though after the first book of the series, I think one begins to expect and welcome the nature of the writing. There is no question that the first book of this series simply knocks your socks off. I'm thinking this continuation is much like the second dish or more of the same ice cream. The first dish is always the best.
Loved this just as much as the first one! Less romance, more interesting steampunk inventions, and I loved the mystery/reveal. Also loved Madam Lefoux! But man am I angry at that ending, Conall will need to do a lot of grovelling in book 3 to make me like him again.
Not quite as awesome as the first book, but still amusing and interesting. And that ending... Glad I have the next book!
not as funny as the first, but I liked it well enough.
******3.5
At first Alexia and Akeldama and Ivy’s characters were charming but I got tired of it after the first book.
Alexia just came off as uppity, Ivy was dumb and I skipped every part that had Akeldama talking. The only characters I could stand were Lord Maccon, Lydell and like 2 others.

While I was reading this installment of the Parasol Protectorate, I was ready to go with 4 stars again...until that ending. I mean really, wtf Connall?!
Since I have the boxed set (digital) from the library, I'm reading the all back to back and it was nice after the first book, the just jump right into the action. We already knew all the characters, so no real introductions were needed. We have a couple of love stories, some political intrigue, spies, attempted murders and some steampunk all wrapped up into one book. Given the ending, I really hope we see progress as we start the next book.

A mysterious plague is causing the vampires and werewolves not to change. When Lord Maccon goes to Scotland to see about a problem with his former pack, Alexia follows him to try to find the source of the plague.
Very enjoyable. Carriger continues her witty style.

I like the premise of the series but this installment ran hot and cold for me. I did a lot of skimming. It was wordy. To many details about things that I really didn't care much about. I like all the characters and their interaction is what kept the story going for me. The story has humor, which is always a plus for me. I like seeing what Ivy would do or say and I like how Alexia has figured just about all of the players out. She knows how to handle all of them so they don't drive her up a wall.
The ending was a HUGH surprise to me, I guess because I kind of expected it. What did they think would happen if an immortal was suddenly human? I was not shock it happened but I was about the response, way over the top I thought and just something to make drama. I'll keep going reading the series because you can't take away that it's originality makes it worth the read. The author is talented but something about the writing and editing makes it rough around the edges when it should be a smooth flowing story.

This was good, but I think the audio version of the first one was more enjoyable. This book did not seem to be available for listening. I'm not sure I'll continue the series if I can't read it with my ears.
