Less ham handed romance in this book than the first (thankfully!) and more steampunk elements because now Alexia is an investigator for the Queen and needs tech. The thing she investigates is kind of interesting and the mannish lady inventor she teams up with is a cool character. Gail Carriger is still not a strong writer - stuff just happens. It's a method my middle school writing teacher described with "POOF: there was a wizard". Convenient wizards appear and the story moves along. A fun read in spite of Alexia's brain dead friend Ivy. I get she was trying for comedic effect but I just wondered why are they friends if Ivy is so incredibly stupid and useless? The end is shit. Someone does something out of character with no reasonable explanation to create a cliffhanger and manipulate you into buying the third book.

One reason I love this series...the author compares the physical pain shifting from human to wolf form and back to "rearranging ones parlor furniture for a party, [because it:] involved a transition from tidy to very messy to tidy once more." HAHAHA!

Holy crap!! I just finished the book and I am...am...flabbergasted! Thats how it ends?? Holy crap! Now I know why the next book is called Blameless.

Good grief, well the ending aside this book was incredible. The science behind the electronic transmitters were sometimes over my head but the plot, the spies, the twists and turns...all awesome. Carriger is amazing and so is this world she has created. I positively cannot wait for the 3rd book come September!

The only things that annoyed me this book were the secondary characters. Ivy, Felicity, Tunstell and their nonsense did nothing to help the plot. All they managed was to annoy me and make me skim onto the real plot and action. In the first book Ivy was funny, adorable, and sweet, and in this book she comes off as almost stupid, annoying, self centered, and dramatic. Hopefully in the 3rd book we see more of Lyall and Akledama instead!

Good thing I have the next one sitting on my shelves!

This is a confectioner's sugar-sweet of a light read in the steampunk style, much like the first in the series. There was perhaps a bit too much on Victorian era fashion for my taste, but it comes with the territory. All in all, I think that this was a somewhat better book than the first book in the series, Soulless. It is perhaps a bit too sugary for me to jump right into the next book, but it's a good occasional read for something with a bit more romance and a dash of parasols.
