Carriger does it again, mixing the lovely parts of Victorian Britain with the less-than-savory bits of supernatural lore and finishing it all off with wonderful humor and wit. I won't claim that Carriger has written the best book I've ever read, but she has a knack for creating wonderful characters and giving them traits that most people wouldn't think to incorporate into Victoria-themed fiction.

I could do with some characters that aren't white, as there were plenty of people in Victorian Britain that were not, and I am hoping to see this variety enter the series as well.

And with that, I am off to read "Blameless", and none too soon after the amazing, if heartwrenching, conclusion to "Changeless"!

This one contains both looted Egyptian antiquities and a mummy-unwrapping party, which while probably historically accurate feels very ooky indeed. Also see previous re perhaps TOO MUCH detail into the working mechanics of aethographers and their valves but well done inventing an interesting steampunk world, Gail Carriger. The A level romance is not very interesting, but I like how well Alexia takes no prisoners.

I still feel like Alexia is unnecessarily mean to Ivy, but since a lot of this book takes place in Scotland, I let it go.
I'm a bit miffed at the cliffhanger, but can't wait to see what comes of it.

Sequel to Soulless, second novel of The Parasol Protectorate series, Changeless continues the life of Alexia Tarabotti [now Lady Alexia Maccon]. Now on a board along with the head vampire and werewolf of London, she works for Queen Victoria. When an unknown weapon, sucking the souls from vampires, ghosts, and werewolves alike plagues the town, Lord Conall Maccon takes off to Scotland! Alexia follows with an entourage by dirigible [floating transportation] to investigate the source of this humanizing weapon.
Again I am in love with the language of this novel, the witty humor and the characters are so well defined. This story left me wondering what was taking Alexia so long in figuring out who the culprit might be. I felt like she wasn't as on top of her game as usual, but the story leads us to understand perhaps why and then leaves us with a cliffhanger. Now, I am required to read the next novel or be left in suspense!

dude, i have such a girl crush on gail carriger right now. i adore these books, because they're paranormal victorian sexy fun. how long do i have to wait until "blameless" comes out? i loved the new characters (hello intriguing french lesbian maybe-spy hat/parasol maker) and welcomed the return of some fan favorites. most of whom are off in the volumes to the wilds of scotland, where we learn dastardly facts and outwit impending doom. and totally cliffhanger ending. which was not entirely unexpected but the reaction to it? hello, drama. give me more, please.

For me, this book was not quite as good as Soulless, but it was pretty close. I enjoy the Maccon's dynamic a lot and the supporting cast is also pretty delightful.

I also do like delving more into the rules of this world, since its take on the supernatural is different from anything I've seen before, which I always appreciate.

But ultimately, I don't think it really did enough to outdo the previous book, though I must praise its ending, since it took a very interesting and even daring turn, leaving me very eager to read more.

“It was a constant source of amazement to Alexia that the only thing she had ever done in her entire life that pleased her mama was marry a werewolf.”

This series is my new addiction! And it's definitely my in-between heavier books series to read. It's so much fun and I really like Alexia as an MC. She's spirited, fun, sarcastic but brave and smart and very very ingenious. I was wondering what the author would do after how book 1 ended, but I'm pleasantly surprised and even more engaged in the story. I like how cute and healthy the relationship between Connal and Alexia is, how supportive they are of each other and how Connal knows how smart and capable Alexia is, and doesn't try to restrain her or is overprotective. She is the Alpha and she is a good leader, and he trusts her a lot.

I liked how Alexia's muhjah role was explored. It was nice to get an inside look into the politics of the supernatural council and how this whole thing works. I was also very pleased with how it explored the ghosts more. They were mentioned in the first novel, but there wasn't much to go on, and here we get to know more about how they are created, how their degeneration works and what they are like overall. There are new characters, and they really add to the story, especially Genevieve, the inventor, and the Scottish pack. The secondary characters have more relevancy here and even side plots. I really like Biffy and his dynamic with the Professor (who is mysterious and quiet in his own right and I really want to know more about him). Lord Alkedama is hilarious and is a very important part of the main plot.

Felicity, Alexia' sister, is annoying and I could've done without her at all. I did enjoy Tunstall and Ivy's debacle, but Ivy was annoying me to no end with her drama and I just wanted her to be toned down a bit. She was often more in the way than helping or doing something interesting, so I couldn't care much for her.

This was, plot-wise, better than the previous installment, not only because it was somehow more complex and helped expand the world, but it had some very good plot twists, though some were predictable. The ending broke my heart into a thousand pieces, but again it was the perfect hook to the sequel. I am definitely picking up the third novel as fast as I can to follow Mrs. Alexia Connal nee Tarabotti's adventures.

Incredibly fun. The slow start was more than made up for with a chaotic supporting cast and the author confirming the queer vibes from the previous book (and adding some).

Better than the first one!
