This book is really good. But also... That ending is so frustrating! Looking forward to the next book, but I hope I'm not going to hate some of these characters too much.
Even better than Soulless. It's just as smart and funny, but more so.
Carriger writes interesting characters, and her plots are always entertaining. However, in just a few pages she completely ruined a beloved character, Lord Maccon. The annoying part is that it did not have to happen. The story could have progressed and ended in the exact same way without ruining the character. He could have doubted his wife, he could have accused his wife, he could have thrown her out, but by making him denigrate her and call her names to the degree that he did makes him unredeemable to me.
I know that future installments will show him discovering he is wrong and feeling apologetic, but now I can never respect the character again. Luckily for Carriger, I bought the whole book series at one shot, and my slight OCD will push me to finish reading the set. Otherwise, I would not finish out the series.

I really enjoyed this book. It's well written, the storie is interesting and exciting and the book has humor. I like this series a lot.
I really like the relationship between Lord and Lady Maccon, and honestly the ending made me quite angry. I want to pick up the next book soon, in the hopes that this whole mess will be resolved very soon!

I loved this one even more than Soulless because the world had been established, so the focus was on story and character development. I enjoyed the addition of the masculinely attired inventor Madame LeFoux and the sapphic tension she brought to her friendship with Alexia. The evolution of the main mystery upped the stakes without becoming too fantastical and jumping the shark while also being intimate and personal to the main characters. The dry wit continued to amuse me.
3.5/5 - Enjoyed and excited to read the next book.
I was unsure to keep going at 60% because I wasn't sure what was being set up (and tbh i skimmed all the aethograph), but after that point the story really picked up.
We learn some interesting things about preternaturals and Macaroon's history. Needs more Lyall, but I was satisfied with the scenes with him we got.
I've been spoiled by the manga and (sneakily reading the wikia), but damn the last 40% or so of this book was set up set up set up set up. I ain't mad about the ending but it didn't make sense to me how Conall came to the conclusion he did knowing Alexia is what she is.

Another solid entry in this series! It's been interesting, essentially working backwards in reading this author's work; I started with the Finishing School series, then read Prudence and Imprudence, and now am reading the Soulless series, as well as some of her short stories. Carriger's writing has shifted and changed over the years, and it's interesting seeing the changes. I'll give a more thorough review at some point that isn't right now.
This series continues to be a heaping helping of supernatural silliness. (That's a good thing.) Even more fun to listen as an audiobook!
