I saw the movie in theaters in November 2024, so I decided to read the book along with the audiobook!

The book is just as great as the movie, but helped to make this an immersive reading experience after taking a break for a while.

it was weird that my due date for this was the day after Pope Francis passed away.

Best book of the year? No one is more surprised than me tbh

socmed told me this was about old man priest yaoi. instead it was actually a very interesting narrative to the secrets buried in an attempt at power.

a slow, but fun ride.

[ proper rating would be a 7.5/10 ]

I loved this book, and the film! It’s hugely about politics and its place in the Church; a really interesting perspective to read as someone who knows little about either. The distinction between the Church and God was also interesting to me, and I liked how there wasn’t a huge climax or mystery to keep the plot going, but a simple small-scale story examining the morals of men. Really great.

Happy to read about a whole group of older characters, an under-represented viewpoint.

Cardinals seem very self-assured so it was great to see more facets when Lomeli was  a bit bumbling, self-doubting or fallible.

The language used is such a strong part of this book, it's detailed and beautiful, not held back.

I liked this book but tbh it made me want to rewatch the film…

Surprisingly entertaining despite not that much going on (apart from intrigue surrounding the election of a new pope). No Dan Brown-level conspiracies or murders.
