I feel confused after reading this book. I’m not even sure what the plot was supposed to be about? I understand that it’s academic point of view “enemies to lovers” but I’m not even sure we got to that at any point in this book…we basically saw Blake obsessed with Medra, keeping his broody distance but never doing anything about it and then just betraying her in the end? Also what’s up with the whole uncle being involved and why did we see the Dragon awaken & leave? I thought this book was about vampires & dragons not Vampires & a dragon rider lol

Disappointed. Started off great with some interesting plots to be developed, however, became too many and barely fleshed out or easy to follow.
Seemed more like a book to try and get as many tropes in as possible, or just chucking in themes from other popular stories in hopes something would stick.
As I read, I got the feeling that it was a Harry potter fanfic that was poorly changed to be an original story.
Don't think I will be carrying on with the series.

This was clearly giving every other popular fantasy book ever. Takes massively from Fourth Wing, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games (and probably more that I just can’t remember right now).
Is it objectively a good book? No. Was it a quick and fun read? Yes.
I felt a real lack of attachment to the characters and there was like no character growth at all?? Whenever I thought the MMC was redeeming himself he had to go and be a possessive, lying, abusive prick. Our FMC was just very one dimensional and I just don’t particularly care for her.
Even when one of the main side characters died I was just like ‘okay??’, had me feeling absolutely nothing - except for how the way they died was just a clear Hunger Games rip off.

The ending has me intrigued so I will probably continue the series, but I am in no rush to do so.

4.5/5 Stars

On Wings of Blood was a rollercoaster. I'm interested to see how things unravel with the politics and magic of the world. I'm also hoping we learn more about Medra's home and her past! There is no shortage of danger and sarcasm, in equal doses, through the entire book. It was a little jarring to go from what felt more like a medieval beginning to a Harry Potter-esque school but we found the flow as the book continued and things leveled out. I will never be over Naveen, the little cinnamon roll. But with so many moving parts and characters, it is inevitable that not everything will be sunshine and rainbows.

Overall, I think this was a strong start to the trilogy and did a great job setting up the starting points for the rest of the series. And the callback from the first chapter in Blake's POV to the final chapter in Medra's was a really nice way to set character expectations and see how we got to such a pivotal point.
