This is the 2nd work of Woodson that I read and finished wondering about a heavy subplot introduced in the novel. Woodson’s novels draw you in, drop heavy topics and leave you to figure out what happened (to a particular subplot and why). This story will resonate with anyone who has a direct or adjacent experience with inner city New York during their youth.

Plot or Character Driven: Character

I enjoyed this book, though at times, the ways it blends poetry and prose was tough for my linear brain. Nevertheless, painful, beautiful, triumphant, and filled with loss.

it wanted to be poetry

When you are Jacqueline Woodson and you can write Brown Girl Dreaming, then everything else you write has to clear a pretty high bar. Fortunately, if you are Jacqueline Woodson, you can also write Another Brooklyn. This book was so short, but it was not at all too short. It was just exactly what it needed to be. What was it? I heard someone call it a "memory poem." That seems about as good as anything. It's beautiful, lyrical, heartbreaking, and there's way more to it than one would suspect, looking at the slim volume. Exquisite.

Poetic - beautiful writing but felt slightly unsatisfying, which may well have been the intent. You never really get to know Autumn and her friends and the other characters seem to exist on the periphery as well but the sense of place and time is strong.

Beautiful, almost lyrical prose about what it means to grow up about friendship, and coming of age, and racism. A short book, but so beautifully written.

I finished this book last week. It was a short book, but packed with a smattering of thought provoking memories. I always love Jaqueline Woodson and as always, she gave me plenty to think about and mull over. This book speaks to childhood remembered and lost, poverty, memory, color, nostalgia, and pain. Quick read, but worth taking your time over.

I had high hopes for this book based on another one of the authors book that I have read. While this book is a easy read I found the story to be just ok. I really didn’t connect with or find any of characters particularly interesting. I did the the way that the story was written which is in a way that only Woodson do. While not the best book of the author that I have read still had positive aspect of it.
