My friend Amy said drop whatever you're doing and read this. She was right. This book does more in its few pages than most books achieve in a thousand. What an amazing piece of writing.

the atmosphere and lyrical prose reminds me of [b:Leaving Atlanta|989563|Leaving Atlanta|Tayari Jones|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1344268638l/989563._SY75_.jpg|975056], both telling stories of childhood innocence (particularly that of black girl childhood) slowly chipping away. there's so much raw emotion and power in the prose, and I teared up more than a few times. there's just something quintessentially human in the setting, something that makes it more than just a story, that makes it feel like a confession.

This is sublime. A beautiful and brutal look at coming of age in Brooklyn in the 70s. Lyrical and heartbreaking. 'We had blades inside our kneesocks and were growing our nails long. We were learning to walk the Brooklyn streets as though we had always belonged to them--our voices loud, our laughter even louder. But Brooklyn had longer nails and sharper blades.'
