”i look at you and i can’t breathe. in my mind, you are already mine.”
cyrus of nara you’ve charmed me with your electric miley cyrus blue eyes your sleepiness and your pathetic yearning
i think this was more vibes than plot advancement, but honestly i can’t even complain because i feel like it was done well! tahereh mafi’s writing is so beautiful and lyrical in these books, and dare i say that (so far) i think the love triangle is being handled well… in a shocking twist of fate i don’t hate any of the characters involved; cyrus and kamran are equally compelling to me, both as love interests and as individual characters (right now, the latter applies more to kamran than it does to cyrus because of the lack of pov chapters but i do think there’s a Lot of potential. also everytime he opened his mouth i had to pause the audiobook to pterodactyl giggle)
my favourite part of twk1 was alizeh and that remains true for this book too. she’s as kind as she is fierce, she doesn’t take shit from anyone — commoner or king alike — and i understand kamran & cyrus so deeply bc if i knew her personally i think she’d consume my every waking thought as well. i just love her SO MUCH she may be in my top 3 favorite YA fantasy characters.
thank u random twitter oomf for this rec 4 stars ♡

i take back what i said last time, kamran you despicable man. i was rooting for you but NOOOO u had to go and be a man. hazan absolutely put him in his place and i love that, their banter was amazing.
dont get me started about cyrus and alizeh, theirs is such a complicated relationship. the banter is amazing, but then there is this intense bond they have and its just ugh making my heart hurt

“You really do exist, then. You’re not merely a fairy tale.”
🧺🪽🪐🗡️
Alizeh gets emotional when she thinks, knows that books are meant for her because they call to her, and likes the company of flowers when she cries I will never not love her. ✨ Cyrus, my favorite prickly prince have I ever been more wrong about a character? If Prince Cardan and Will Herondale had a love child it would be him. 🤍 God the tension, the political intrigue, the ANGST? It was like I woke up after being thoroughly lodged in this world and realized that these characters were now such a visceral part of me. Need the rest of the series now. ☁️

THIS REVIEW (RANT) MIGHT (WILL DEFINITELY) CONTAIN SPOILERS
“Take care, Cyrus," she chided him. "If you keep laughing like that, I'm liable to think you have a heart."
"Oh, you needn't worry," he said, his smile fading. "I most certainly don't."
The nosta went cold.”
That was painful...
I absolutely adore Cyrus. He is a mystery. Alizeh probably shouldn't trust him because of Iblees and all. But he is so cool. Not the boring kind like Kamran. And for some reason I love it when Cyrus gets angry. I love it when he and Alizeh fight. Its so refreshing. And that glass stairs scene? I sooo loved the part where Alizeh changed from being angry and desperate to acting like a child afraid.
And I absolutely hate Kamran. He is so mean and such a killjoy. If Alizeh sorts things out with him, imma commit suicide. He does not deserve her forgiveness. Nor Hazan's. The thing I hate most about Kamran is that he doesn't take a moment to assume the worst of someone. grieving or no, I don't care. I don't know if I should call him soft or heartless. Kamran easily trusts and then happily declares them a traitor without a shred of evidence after any small incident. Oh, wait, he was presented with evidence for Alizeh's innocence. But no, THAT is when he will remember that he is too soft. I swear the guy sounds like a child.
The last few chapter of Alizeh's POV were so painful. I wanted to go murder Iblees myself just so that Cyrus doesn't have to go through all that pain.
"But will you promise me one thing, Angel? When you decide to kill me, will you tell me how you intend to do it?"
"Cyrus-"
"Enough, I beg you," He shook his head, "I am only a man, Alizeh, I can only withstand so much torture in one day. Please." his voice quivered, "Leave me. Leave me to this God's forsaken life."
Why, Iblees, why?
