I loved this and just want more of it. The synopsis makes it out to be a very different book, and it was so much better than I was expecting.

This is a pretty light-read with serious topics tackled. The premise of the story is that 2 strangers become each other’s “emergency contact”. From this relationship, they able to spill their biggest secrets and insecurities through text messages. It reminds me of how one can feel more comfortable behind a screen but not be able to open up when they are in the presence of that same individual. There is safety behind our phones that allows us to reveal our true thoughts. This can be positive but it can also lead to some negativity/ cruelty (that the book does not tackle). In general, this was a sweet love story of what a modern-day romance looks like through technology. Was truly excited to read a novel by a female Asian author. The cover of this novel is beyond gorgeous.

It was just bad… the MC was absolutely annoying. The plot goes practically no where?? Idk it felt very much like a waste of time.
can i PLEASE find a book that i can read that i won't skim? k. thanks.
when i first started this, i was like, o shit, this is hard to read. maybe that means it's going to be good and dense, or whatever.
unfortunately, wrong.
everyone felt like the same level of witty and insecure, and penny is not a likable character, she's aloof and judge-y, and doesn't ever redeem herself.
the idea of a romance via text was intriguing, but the execution never grabbed me.

Painfully slow at start, but comes to a great emotional resolution. I didn't really feel attached to Penny (main character) either.

I am almost embarrassed with how much I loved this book. It made me laugh out loud, it made my heart hurt, it helped me understand some parts of my own brain. If I could morally stand to steal from the public library, I would keep this copy forever because I feel emotionally attached.
