I liked it, but there were some things that bugged a little.
The texts between Penny and Sam were strong. I liked the development of their friendship via this media. That said, I felt they had a strong friendship. I didn't really see a romance, moreso it was an attraction on Penny's side. I didn't see Sam's feelings really developing as a romance, especially as he was justifiably distracted by all the drama with his ex (or current, hard to know). The romance seemed somewhat slapped on to this YA coming of age story.
Penny - I had mixed feelings. She was so judgy, especially towards her mom. I thought she was pretty harsh towards her mom, especially on her mom's birthday. Though, I did like her awkwardness and her efforts at a new start, off in a college where she doesn't know anyone. Not that many young people do that these days. A true fresh start story is refreshing.
I wish Penny would have explored more with the guy from her class with the British accent, as Sam had his plate full.

{4.5 stars} This ended up being a whole lot more moving and relatable then I’d anticipated going into it. Definitely a nice surprise!
Cute modern teen romance complete with an abnormally "woke" male protagonist, class struggle, mental health issues on both sides, interracial dating, and parents ranging from abusive to mildly misguided but well-intentioned.
This a two-star book, but I cried somehow at the end, so. meh. extra star for that I guess.
It took me a hot minute to get into the story. I have recently read a lot of fantasy, and I wasn't ready to enter a world with iPhones and pop culture references. The romantic relationship between Penny and Sam was adorable. I found myself happy-cringing at the cuteness. Emergency Contact is a relateable and PG teen contemporary romance. We all need those from time to time.
