If I understand correctly, I believe the book had to end the way it did because Mitchell wanted to truly showcase the indomitable spirit of the south. However, it still rips your heart out.

So amazingly written with strong characters. 5/5, fighting white guilt.
Too slow and too much “racism and slavery is good” rhetoric

This truly is an American classic. I enjoyed it so much more than the movie! Scarlet is so interesting, so symbolic of the South, more specifically Georgia and Atlanta. My modern PC mentality had trouble with the writer's discussions of, descriptions of, and slang for the African American characters, but I was able to understand the mentality of the South and their relationship with the land and their workers. I think everyone should read this book to understand some of the history of the United States.
re-read
Still a great story with great characters--however in this day and age it's difficult to read about the treatment of slaves and the reconstruction in a one sided biased way.

| infinity honestly | this book is certainly one of my most favourite. I hate and love the ending. its complete and also incomplete. scarlett oh how much I love and detest you. only for people who have read the book: if she hadnt been soo stupid to love ashley, she would have been happy. and rhett and her were just perfect. he loved her but she hurt him soo much. finally old love wore out. nothing lasts forever. and THEN she realized she loved him. scarletts only daughter with rhett was what kept him happy. scarlett didnt love him cause she was crazy over ashley so rhett gave all his love to his daughter. when she died, half of him died and only melanie saved him from madness. melanie shouldnt have died. longest book ever and every second was worth it. paperback NEEDED.
