   | infinity honestly  | this book is certainly one of my most favourite. I hate and love the ending. its complete and also incomplete. scarlett oh how much I love and detest you. only for people who have read the book: if she hadnt been soo stupid to love ashley, she would have been happy. and rhett and her were just perfect. he loved her but she hurt him soo much. finally old love wore out. nothing lasts forever. and THEN she realized she loved him. scarletts only daughter with rhett was what kept him happy. scarlett didnt love him cause she was crazy over ashley so rhett gave all his love to his daughter. when she died, half of him died and only melanie saved him from madness. melanie shouldnt have died. longest book ever and every second was worth it. paperback NEEDED.

I have mixed feelings on this book. On one hand, it’s too long for essentially a story about two characters (Rhett and Scarlet) and all other characters feel very secondary including Ashley who Scarlet pines over ridiculously, it feels like Margaret Mitchell wanted to put too much into this book, not just the central romance but also how the civil war started and ended, how the KKK came to prominence, the societal and economic aftermath if the war and the KKK and the politics at the time in the south and how it changed after the war, the south’s fear of change at the time and their devotion to their traditions and way of life, etc. And don’t get me wrong, all of this is interesting, but I think there’s more than one story worth of meat here that Mitchell greedily put all into one epic and I’m not sure if it was the best idea. Some scenes feel like they happen just for Mitchell to utilize all of her research, similar to a lot of peoples’ complaints about Dan Simmons. While it makes the world feel real instead of fiction, it makes the novel unnecessarily bloated and long, like I don’t mind a long book but this story doesn’t need to be over 1,000 pages. I also don’t like Mitchell’s tendency to show a scene, then turn around and spend like 30 pages explaining to the reader what happened and restating what she showed by telling. But on the other hand, the descriptions and characterizations are rich, the people, places, and events feel real and fully fleshed out, the tragedies that happen are heart wrenching, and there is deep emotion at times. Too bad the main characters are so unlikeable. I don’t know what Scarlet sees in Ashley, or what Rhett sees in Scarlet. Scarlet is repugnant and selfish and just a horrible person. I really liked Rhett until he became the biggest hypocrite in the end. Like he was always an asshole, but he owned it and was a likeable asshole. He knew what Scarlet was and still had the shocked Pikachu face when she didn’t change. And in the end when Scarlet started to grow the hell up, it was too little too late which happens all too often in this life, it’s a very realistic tragedy. All too relatable.

There is no character ever created like Scarlett and while you feel for her, I don’t think your ever meant to like her. I wasn’t bored once and struggled not to bawl my face off more than once. Life was so crazy back then with racism and slavery but this book gives perspective to all sides while wrenching your heart out.

Welp, this was 1000 pages. Glad I read it, and I really did enjoy it. It certainly presents a romantic view of the "Lost Cause," but complicates that narrative with a female lead. Lots to commend and lots to critique. Now, to watch the movie.
