DNF Chapter 2 p 31
I did not like the characters' description of slaves.

I don't know if I can adequately rate this book because it made me feel so many things. Sometimes I hated it and the characters annoyed me so much that I wanted to stop reading. Other times the book made me cry. I'm guessing it was the author's purpose to make me be so freaking annoyed by Scarlet because holy guacamole! I can't even begin to explain. And honestly, I didn't think I would be reading a 1000-page book that was 90% about the war (at least it felt that way). I didn't like the ending either and I have decided to make my own extended ending to suit my stupid brain :)
I think I need to read some other people's good reviews so I can get a better understanding of this mess in my head right now. I haven't had these strong, complicated, messy feelings about a book in a while.
I'm totally going to watch the movie though, as I haven't had the pleasure yet.

I listened to an audio book version, which was 49 hours long. The first 6 hours had basically nothing happening except descriptions of houses and dresses, and I thought I would never get through it- it was sooo boring.
But then I realized you needed this setup to understand Scarlett, because that was all she thought about too. And you watched her progress through the civil war and reconstruction and all of the craziness around the war, and marriage and children, watching how it changed her, although she tried to deny growing up or even thinking about any of it.
I also appreciated the southern perspective on the war, which I had never read before, and was horrified by what happened during it. The philosophy sprinkled through was enlightening, even though Scarlett had no idea what was happening.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend to others.

I thought it would be pulp fiction, and ended up finding literature.
I was expecting a much simpler melodrama and was surprised to instead find a strong, layered portrayal of flawed characters. It's not an easy book to read, and I don't blame anyone for having problems with the language, portrayal of slavery, or its general attitude toward the war. That's all there, and it's ugly. But if you can take the book on its own terms, while it's not Austen, it does make many poignant observations about its characters, and traces in Scarlett how the strengths and weaknesses of her character affect her relationships with others.

It took me forever to finally dust this book off and read it. I can understand why people love it and hate it. It’s portrayal of race and history is disturbing, but I had to keep in mind that this story is being told from a third person’s perspective who knows the thoughts and feelings of every character in the book. So we are getting the perspective of southerners during the civil war…of course not everything is going to be politically correct. I truly think this is how most southerners perceived the Civil War and Reconstruction…love it or hate it…it was their opinion.
Personally, I loved this story. The sophisticated simplicity of the writing and storytelling was almost perfection. The depiction of these characters being realistic people going through trying times is what I loved most. We witness Scarlett O’Hara go from a carefree southern belle to a hardcore survivor over night. The examples of themes of love and loyalty throughout the book both impressed and angered me.
I’m glad I read this book and will probably read it again.
