7/31/25: 4.5 stars. Super racist but her writing is superb and it was an interesting look at Civil War America.
Read in the 1980's. Reading again as part of a Litsy group read along. 2017 Schedule:
Part 1: June 5-11
Part 2: June 12-18
Part 3: June 19-25
Part 4: June 26-July 2
Part 5: July 3-9
I read ahead of schedule because I just couldn't put it down at times. Everyone should read this book at least once in their life.

I'm sure I'm gonna get some heat for this, but I really enjoyed this book. Especially the characters. Are the characters racist? Absolutely. Is Margaret Mitchell racist? Possibly. However, I feel like this should all be a given and known before you even begin to read the story. The setting is in the South during and after the Civil War, and the characters are rich, white, plantation owners. It was also written in the mid 30's. If the characters weren't racist, it sadly wouldn't be accurate for the time and setting. I also think it's kinda "feministy" due to the main character though. Having said all that, I loved the story. I remember watching this movie as a kid and as I read the first half, scenes would pop into my mind. I once loved Scarlett so much. I don't remember the ending though, so that had me on my toes and want to finish the story quickly. I now hate Scarlett though, and after the ending....I still hate Scarlett. Like, I can't stand her (which made me love her character even more).
The best book ever written. If you've never read it, but have seen the movie- the movie DOES NOT give it justice. It's long but 100% worth it.
I am very, very happy to be able to, finally, declare myself done with Gone With The Wind.

It's a classic. I made myself read it. I feel better informed about the book, its significance in our modern day society, and general references made to it. I found it slow in many parts, and just not for me.

This book is really long and drawn out. By the end of it, you want to kill Scarlett but at the same time you feel sorry for her.
