I wanted to like this book. But after pages of Scarlett whining about Ashley before stuff started happening, I was getting anxious to be through. The war years allowed me to admire Scarlet’s grit, but it was overshadowed by her immaturity. Ultimately, I came to one conclusion: in a word of Scarletts, be a Melanie.

The author created incredible characters that you can't help but love and hate at the same time. The banter was especially fun to read, though sometimes, it did feel out of character.
I read this as part of my reading challenge under the category of "a book that intimidates you." Well, I didn't need to be intimidated. 1,037 pages long and I didn't want it to end. I never knew that this was Margaret Mitchell's first novel, or that it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. It's also surprising that Mitchell never wrote another book.
I didn't want to carry this hefty volume with me on vacation, but couldn't quite finish it before departing. With just 5 pages left, I had to set it aside for over a week. When I returned home last night, I got to go back to Tara and finish. It's one of those books that you can get completely swept up in the setting. When I read this book, I was in the South in another time. To me, that's a mark of a good book. I'm so glad I finally read this one. I thought it was going to be like work, but it was a page-turning pleasure.

MUCH funnier, and more uncomfortably racist, than I expected. I listened to this via audiobook and enjoyed it.
Literally THE best book to read!!!! The relationship between Scarlett and Rhett is so legendary. I LOVE this book and I've read all the branches of it (though not from the original author).
Felt like reading this again so I did. I had forgotten how blatantly racist this book is. Too bad because it is a very good story, great pace, great characters. I'll let the 4 star rating stand because I like the story of star crossed lovers Rhett and Scarlet, two scoundrels who belong together but just can't seem to get it together.
Scarlett is a much more complex character than I expected, and I loved the way the Civil War was presented in the book.

Such a beautifully written story about the Civil War. It shows just how hard life was for those during the war and the story of Scarlett is so well written.
It broke my heart when Bonnie died and then Melanie so soon after 😭
