I knew this book involved racism, but I just thought that was part of the story and time period. What I read was the writings of racist glorification. It was gross. I couldn’t find the romance or the heroism. I’m giving the second star because Scarlett was a memorable character, that’s for sure. That’s the best I can say.

I always thought this book would be a sappy romance that lacked substance, but I have been missing out. I now understand why "Gone With the Wind" has become a classic. There is some romance, but it's not too sappy. There is also plenty of historical background that personalizes the Civil War era in the South. Granted, it only gives one side of that story, but that's called perspective. One of these days I will read "Uncle Tom's Cabin", which will be an interesting comparison. I can't wait to watch the movie for the first time!

An epic tale that gives you the perspective of the South before and after the Civil War. The main character is not a nice person, but you can respect her for her ability to survive and even thrive in the face of tragedy.
An epic saga. I'm not sure how I remained so culturally ignorant that I did not know the plot of this already, but I was devastatingly disappointed that there was not a happy ending for Rhett and Scarlett - I was eagerly anticipating it the whole time. Overall, a great read, though. My only other quibble was a bit of irritation at the unevenness of Scarlett's character in some places - how could she be so savvy, sharp and astute in business dealings and so incredibly slow & ignorant in some other regards?
me agobia calificar tan entusiastamente una novela que es histórica y política y nostálgica del sur confederado sin dejar por lo menos un par de notas de por qué lo hago: las reseñas más críticas me parecen simplistas donde hablan de "un narrador omnisciente racista y misógino" para el que no hay excusa sin acusar las restricciones de la focalización y todo lo que hace la coralidad por volver porosa la ideología del libro; creo que es coherente con su concepto y con sus temas el que sea una novela miope (con una voz que no ve de lejos, que no acaba de contextualizar con voz propia algo que escribe decididamente desde dentro) pero que ve de cerca excelentemente bien; creo que esa elección de punto de vista es incómoda y entiendo las razones que llevan a rechazarla políticamente (por qué voy a leer 900 páginas sesgadas por la ideología de los esclavistas derrotados) pero me parece vago y también miope hacerla pasar por panfleto o monumento acrítico del sur confederado: es rica y crítica y cruel con sus héroes y se alía con sus villanos, cuestiona la Causa por la que todos luchan y niega la posibilidad de permanencia y la virtud del antiguo sistema; sí problematiza un cambio que afecta negativamente a los personajes en los que se ancla, y el punto de vista de los afroamericanos libres y rebeldes es el más sangrantemente ausente (y lo es, sangrante, especialmente en los pasajes del klan); ahora bien: me parece mucho menos contradictoria de esos relatos propios de la emancipación que del otro relato ajeno, el de los blancos vencedores del norte, hamilton y lincoln y esa narrativa de los héroes solidarios que sí borra, creo, una experiencia más compleja de la guerra y una visión más informada de lo de antes y lo de después; no sé si es peligrosa esta gama para alguien con los colores básicos menos claros; no sé si es importante leer esta novela, y si lo es no sé si es por la política -es el ritmo y son los personajes y es la encadenación del conflicto y la tragedia y las microrrecompensas, todo lo que puede resultar atractivo de una novela romántica que es superanticlimática pero perfectamente intensa- y me repito porque esta última digresión es muy larga: no sé si hay que leer esta novela, pero sí que creo que es una buena novela

Second time reading this giant book but it brought back memories of reading this as a kid and loving the excitement of the story. Has a lot of historical issues but it is a view from the eyes of Scarlett. And worth the read
