The main character or heroine of the book Scarlet O'Hara is probably the most fascinating and unexpected woman I have ever read about. She is naughtiest, craziest, clever, jealous, brave, daring girl. The novel is actually about the Civil War in America, when Abraham Lincoln signs the treaty of freeing all the slaves and Southerners who don't want to accept it fight for the cause with Northeners (Yankees) to have their rights back. I had never thought that the book about the war could be so amazing! The writer, Margaret Mitchell has written with such a flow that nobody would ever get bored or confused reading such a great novel. And the relations Scarlet with the characters like Rhett Butler and Asheley Wilkes and Melanie, the conflicts within her life, her love of life and parties and gowns, her carelessness and independence, every aspect of her is so vivacious. She is what every girl wants to be like and at some times she is someone who you would just want to slap and shout at. She is a mystery and her love life with Rhett Butler is also not less than mystery. She thinks she is in love with Ashely Wilkes, Melanie's husband, but I don't think Ashely is any good for her. I haven't come to the end of the book and I am wondering what will I do after I finish it at last. But it sure is a wonderful book of all. War is so dreadful and things after war is finished are much much dreadful. I felt like I went through the same starvation Scarlet and her family went through, and it made me hungry myself. I even thought, the Scarlet's hunger for money and security were very relevant and she was the bravest girl to go through all the miseries and rise up again to be healthy and wealthy. In spite of all the bad things happened to her two husbands, her mother and father and Melanie, she never gave up the hope. She was hopeless optimistic and she always says that, "Tomorrow is a new day and everything can start anew." But you could be bewildered, mad and sorry for her for the roads she took to become rich. It sure costs a good deal of reputation and time for her to do that. Melanie on the other hand is just the opposite of Scarlet, but brave and loving. She is so so good, that every time I read the novel, I thought how nice would be to have a friend like her, who never judges anyone... I, like Scarlet never understood Rhett Butler. He is good but he tries to become bad to her. And I was so sad to imagine the fear and regret in his face when the daughter he loved the most died! How he must have suffered! And the end was sad yet hopeful.... Scarlet never loses hope, does she?
I don't think I have words enough to do justice for this novel. I laughed, I cried, I felt everything with Scarlett. I adore this story, given that the movie is my favourite and I'm happy to say I've finally read it.
Scarlett O'Hara is so human, with her struggles, her thoughts, feelings, desires and detestable attitudes but she feels so very real. For me, she is just as easy to love as she is to be frustrated at - plenty of times I wished I could reach through the pages and shakes her (along with a few other characters too). But in the end, she's Scarlett O'Hara and tomorrow is another day.

I was blown away by this book. I had zero expectations, except it was a “great American story”. Even then, I was thinking it would be a love story.
It provided a glimpse into a period of time I didn’t know much about in the US. I loved the scenes the author painted, the clothing and the class system explanations. But I don’t know I have read such extraordinary character developments and character exchanges. It was so great.
But the fact that the two main characters are mostly awful and don’t end up together was the biggest departure of typically character arcs - to incredible effect! Granted they were both shaped during extreme circumstances, but their personalities overall were of selfish, arrogant, people. Which, like Rhett said, made them a perfect match.
This book was published in the 1930’s, which was a different time, but I cringed repeatedly at how it spoke about black people - it was difficult.
I listened on audiobook and the narrator was 10/10!
