This book examines the plight of man trying to navigate rural America during the Great Depression in the 1930's when jobs were scarce. At the heart of the story are two men with a sibling dynamic, one being protective over the other, whose companionship is what gives each other hope for a better tomorrow. I think where this book resonated with me the most are the dynamics between men during challenging times: you will either form a brotherhood or meet people who create resistance; also, often times men tend to conform to the power dynamics of a group even if when it leaves them feeling morally compromised, particularly in times of vulnerability when it's difficult to muster up courage--the fear of abandonment and isolation is too much of a risk. The story ultimately takes you to both tender and tragic places when tough decisions need to be made to survive.

Oh this book is so sad. I didn't read this at school and it had been on my tbr list for years. Finally got round to reading it today. So heartbreaking all the loss and not understanding. May have to hug my pups extra hard today.

Unexpectedly incredible, this book took a turn for the better at the 80% mark and I loved the way it panned out and eventually concluded, giving impacting yet subtle messages.

A good read, despite the fact that I knew the ending beforehand.
