With the way this ended, I cannot imagine reading this as it was published and having to wait a year for Wrath. I would have lost my mind 😅

My god. I have no words.
I thought the love confession was heart wrenching, then the confessions of betrayal in chapter 88. But nothing compares to that last line. John Gwynne took my heart amd shattered it into a million pieces. How do you end a book that way?!

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but I still think the series as a whole is (and has been) too long. A trilogy would've been perfect IMO. Some of the character POVs are just, meh. I feel like the series would've been better with fewer POVs. As another reader stated, it feels as if some character POVs are introduced only for the character to get killed off. After a while, the deaths lose impact and as a reader, I didn't really care all that much. So far, my favorite POV's have been Maquin's and Camlin's, with Veradis' as a close 3rd (even if his shield wall is a little too perfect and gimmiky). The ending of the book...oof. For a couple of reasons. The 1st....if you've read the book, you know. The second, has more to do with the story arc. Seems like it's always 1 step forward, 2 steps back for the good guys. After over 2000 pages, it gets a little frustrating. Also, some things seem to just happen, which is offputting. For example, late in the book we see Nathair in Mikil doing stuff, and then all of a sudden, he's in Drassil. Like, WTF? How did that happen? Looking forward to reading the final book, partly to see how the story ends, but also partly because I'm ready to move on.

“Honour. Or death. And sometimes one follows the other.”
“Dark times are here, the night is upon us, and we all must be vigilant if we want to see Dawn rise again.”
Never has a book title captured my feeling so well after ending it; I am Ruined. The last two hundred pages of this book had me in a constant state of anxiety and anger, while simultaneously crying happy tears and being hopeful. John Gwynne knows how to weave a multi-layered story with way more characters and plot lines than is advisable, and ace it. Just when you think you figure it out, boom something happens that has one flabbergasted. The handling of good versus evil, the politics, the found family trope, the chosen one(s) trope, betrayals and hope, all of it was so well done. This series is easily becoming one of my favorites I’ve ever read and I can’t wait to see how it concludes in the next book.
