This isn't the world as you know it. It has been divided. After the Great Disruption, the world has been divided into different eras. Sophia lives in New Occident, a section of the world set in the 1800s. Her uncle, the brilliant Shadrack, is a famous cartologer. He leaves her a glass map and instructions to find an old friend. Sophia leaves the only world she has ever know and goes trekking across the different eras in search of a way to save her uncle. With the help of new friends, she gets into wild adventures. I was unable to put the book down once I started it. I would recommend for any upper elementary or middle school library. It has a little bit of everything.

What a refreshingly original book! Fabulous world-building, likable characters. Wow!

And, even better, it has a satisfactory ending with almost all the plot points tied up neatly. Of course it ends with a dangling thread to tease us into reading the next book, but it's not annoying, just intriguing.

I suspect I may give it 5 stars if I re-read it. But it's due back to the library so I don't have time to do that.

Enjoyed the overall story, the end was particularly interesting.

It felt like a lot of the plot was forced rather than naturally flowing which made it read slowly at times. However, I can't complain about that too much since it is a book for younger readers. The main character was not particularly interesting to me.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and I will be continuing on with the series when future books are released. I think this would be a really great tv show ;)

I have mixed feelings about this book. I wanted to love it because I love maps! (Obsessed, is more accurate.)
But I struggled with the story in the beginning and it wasn't until I switched to the audio book (the narrator was fantastic!) that I really started enjoying it.
I do think the story started getting a little muddled and dragging on (which lowered my star rating for sure) but of course the twist ending hit me hard.

I REALLY hope we run into the pirates again!

DNFing 80 pages in, unfortunately :/
idk if i just wasn’t in the right mood or what, but these first 80 pages were painfully boring. i really wanted to love this though, maybe someday i’ll come back to it.
