Very intriguing but very slow distopian YA novel. In some way, this story reminds me of the His Dark Materialstrilogy by Philip Pullman, specially of The Amber Spyglass.

It's tells you the story about Lark who lives in a world where magic keeps people sane. The magic her city lives off is dying out and if nothing happens, the whole city will become part of the wilderness that is surrounding it. Without knowing, Lark is sent out to find the Iron Wood, a place were enough magic is to be found.

The story about Lark and her quest to the Iron Wood is very well thought of. It has a surprising plot and enough layers to keep it interesting. But the whole story is told soooo slow, it's very hard to keep on reading, since your mind will wander off every now and then.

The combination of the very interesting and intriguing story but the dragging style, makes me indecisive wether I'll give the book two or three stars... It was definately ok, but -in my opinion- could've done with some speed.

UPDATE: Apparently was the manuscript that the agent sent me, not finished yet. If I have to believe some others who commented on my review, a lot of things have changed. Please note that I never intended to give a false review but that I had the assumption this was a final draft since the agent spoke of 'debut' and never of 'unfinished manuscript'.

What it's about: Lark's world is turned upside down when she finds out she is different from all the other people in her city and the Institute want to keep her locked up. She has to go outside the wall in search of others like her.

What I thought: This book was fantastic! Lark is sixteen years old when she finally gets chosen for Harvest. Despite all the teasing she has gotten, it's finally her turn to find out where she fits in. This Dystopian world, where everyone gets stripped of their Resource (or magic) before they hit their teenage years and get selected for a job they have for the rest of their life was so well created, it was sad we didn't get to see much of it. However outside the wall was so interesting, if it wasn't for the constant reminders of back inside the city, I think I might have forgotten all about it. Outside the Wall, it's dangerous. Despite being cannibals lurking around every corner, Lark experiences so much more than she ever would have in the city. All the characters were so well created, I couldn't help but fall in love with all of them - Except Caesar and Gloriette of course. I highly recommend this for all lovers of dystopian, magic, and fantastically written novels.

The good: The amazing twists towards the end absolutely shocked me, I totally didn't see them coming! Plus, I felt like I was constantly beside Lark, feeling what she felt.

The bad: I felt the start was slow for me, and my attention began to wane. I had to get through about 70 pages before my interest really picked up.

I feel really bad because this is my first Did-Not-Finish in a while. It was very slow, and I know sometimes books take a bit to kick off (that was page 43), so I held on. I wish I had some good things to say, but I don't. The writing is boring, there's barely any dialogue, and not really a lot of explanation when the books begins. Again, I quit at page 107, so there's probably some good stuff, but I couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel.
I understand that there couldn't be a lot of dialogue because of the protag's situation, but there could have been better inner monologue, or better narration. To me, Lark is rather boring, and her actions . . . sometimes don't make sense. She is realistic--for example, if I was trapped in a large building about to be harvested and tortured over and over again, I'd settle into a stupor, too--but she's not particularly interesting.
If this book appeals to you, give it a shot. It probably needs another pair of eyes. It just didn't work for me. Sorry, Megan. :/

It was just perfect! I really enjoyed reading this book (again) and it was very emotional at the end. This book is such a special book. No stupid teen dramas; No annoying communication problems; And a really authentic protagonist that you just have to love. For me the best young adult book!
