I was intrigued by this book, especially when I read that the author made up an immigrant child that he reported on for the New York Times. He has since become a best-selling writer - typical white man failing upward. So I found his fascination with the ethics and morals of the main character in this story interesting. This person is apparently quite real - a Frenchman made famous in the 1990s, at least in certain circles, by systematically and almost constantly stealing art from many museums all over France, Switerzland, and Belgium. The young man and his girlfriend, only in their early twenties when they began their quest, didn't sell the things they stole, but rather lined the attic of his mother's small house where they lived with oil paintings and medieval weaponry, among many other treasures. It's pretty fascinating, and Finkel talks to detectives and psychologists who tried to figure this guy out.

An interesting little nonfiction read. Compellingly written in narrative form and a very intriguing topic. Not really emotionally gripping or hilarious, just interesting.
