I read this back in the days when vampire YA was king. I wanted more vampires after reading Twilight, and picked this up...and to this day, I'm reading the spinoff series. Lots of supernatural YA is dumb and not memorable, but not VA. It's a cool mix of supernatural, romance and magic. The characters (especially our heroine Rose) are spunky and have a lot of depth. I'm excited for the movie to come out this Valentine's Day!

Decent, I like how fast-paced it was. I also love how Rose is a badass and takes sh!t from no one.

NOT thrilled, however, by the 17 y/o and 24 y/o romantic relationship. I like how this age gap will be smaller in the show.

It got good at the ending but that was so short. Why the beginning was so slowwwww. What was that ending laughterr? Oh hell no

I've come to the conclusion that maybe I just don't like vampire books. I can't think of one that I really loved, unless there were a lot of other paranormal creatures involved. I also think listening to this on audio didn't help, because I think the person reading it was too cutesy. The voice she did for Lissa sounded like a nine year old, and just didn't work for the things that were going on. I think I may have liked it a little better (but only maybe 3 stars) had I read it on my own. I don't know if I would continue on with the series.

I read this to make my 13 year old self happy. If I was younger and in my early to mid teens, I would have been so in love with this book! Since I’m older than that though, I read it with a different perspective. Throughout most of the book, I was mainly surprised and upset about the age gap between the characters, but it was a fun read otherwise!

I remember reading this book in a Kroger while my grandmother was waiting for a prescription and then she got roped into watching a demonstration to get a free something or other. It was entertaining enough. I don’t recall a lot of it but I remember having a good time when I was in middle school. Better than watching a lady whip cream or whatever was happening in that grocery store. I do remember the way she gets back to the academy was really gripping to me that day. I wanted to know what else was going to happen so I asked her to buy it for me.
