I've seen this performed live when I was in college. Definitely recommend experiencing this work in that form.

What brought this audiobook down for me was that there was only one narrator. Normally that doesn't matter but it's a bit jarring to hear the narrator constantly having to mention who's speaking during large group moments. It became a bit confused for me as well at times as I couldn't keep track of which character was speaking during those moments.

Overall while plays and poetry are better to see or hear performed I would recommend seeing this in person as it will be a bit easier to follow which characters are speaking while allowing you to fully feel the weight and emotion of the poetry.

bein alive & bein a woman & bein colored is a metaphysical dilemma

The book dunked me into a stream of vibes, an emotional flow state. I didn't track each character. I didn't try to make the experiences chronological or find the ways they slip into and away from each other. These feel like projects for rereads. This first time, from the irregular spelling and grammar, to the startling shifts in stage direction, I mostly tried to trace mood. As a result, I'm super curious about how lighting and sound have been used to enhance this production; the tone whiplashes often, and in addition to actors' bodies, I imagine these other tools are essential.

i loved this — the poetry of it makes it flow so beautifully, and even just reading it, i had so many ideas for directing.

This play of poetry, song and dance is exactly what I needed to read right now.  It's true that colored girls will find this when they need it.  I personally found it to be a way to connect with my mother.  To better understand, hear and see her.  So much I can relate to and so much that parallels what my mother had been through.  It's a beautiful work of art that encompasses the different fractions of colored girls.  It hurts my heart but I felt incredibly seen.
