I've never had to remind myself that I was reading a poem before until I read this play.
Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich um ein ziemlich interessantes Theaterstück, das auf meiner Leseliste für Amerikanische Literatur stand. Ich hab schon wirklich viele Theaterstücke gelesen und trotzdem hat mich dieser Text auf allen Ebenen überrascht.
Zuerst mal das offensichtlichste: Dieses Theaterstück besteht nicht nur aus Text und Regieanweisungen, sondern ist eigentlich ein sehr langes Gedicht, das von verschiedenen Frauen vorgetragen soll und immer wieder durch Tanz unterbrochen wird. Ich wünschte, ich könnte mir dieses Stück ansehen, damit ich es wirklich authentisch erleben kann. Mit den Tänzen und den wirren Bewegungen und der Musik und allem drum und dran.
Dadurch, dass das Stück in Gedichtform geschrieben ist, fiel es mir zu Beginn des Texts ziemlich schwer, mitzukommen. Nach den ersten paar Seiten kam mir dann die Idee, dass ich den Text doch laut vorlesen könnte. Nun, was soll ich sagen? Das machte die ganze Sache um so vieles einfacher! Am besten wäre es gewesen, wenn ich noch eine zweite Person bei mir gehabt hätte, mit der ich mich abwechseln hätte können. Alleine sechs oder sieben Rollen zu lesen, fand ich schwierig. Zu zweit hätten wir uns abwechseln können und die ganze Sache wäre lustiger gewesen.
Nun, lustig ist dieses Stück definitiv nicht, also ist der vorherige Satz vielleicht nicht ganz passend. Es geht um (hauptsächlich sexuelle) Gewalt gegen Frauen, um Sexismus und Rassismus. Dabei wird die Autorin auch ziemlich explizit - sollte bei euch also irgendwie die Gefahr bestehen, dass euch diese Themen triggern, dann lest dieses Buch besser nicht.
Mein Fazit? Ein sehr interessantes Theaterstück, das mich wirklich überrascht hat.

I NEED to see this as a production. And I also need to reread it because WOW there are so many layers to it.
More like a 4.5 but still Oh my God.
I'm not easily brought to tears, especially not over books, but I could feel the sting of tears in my eyes for at least half of this book. It was so, so powerful.

I've never really had much affection for poetry and to be honest sometimes I have trouble making sense of it. I think poetry can sometimes represent a persons unedited inner monologue. It's intimate and personal; a raw image of what they are experiencing. However, this 'choreopoem', allowed things to be structured in a way that I could follow the story, the intersect of the characters experiences. I will be honest and say that the language choice and sentence structure sometimes had me stumped, but after careful consideration I think I could draw my own conclusions and meanings within. I like reading the authors foreword and Shange's mention of the different interpretations this play has taken form. I think that is really important as while it is for colored girls, I think it is also empowering for women as a gender. There was one line that stuck with me, "i cdnt stand bein sorry & colored at the same time". In the past I have always viewed marginalisation individually, people with disabilities, people of different race, or gender, and have never considered what discrimination a person would face with more than one marginalising quality. It hit me how much harder it would be for a person and that obviously this would be common, and how could I have never considered this before? I guess the line stuck with me because as a white woman I've never had the dilemma of picking between whether someone is discriminating against me because of my race or gender, or both. It is something I have taken for granted or maybe am diluted enough to have such a privileged white mentality. I guess it is something that I will keep considering.

The plot of the book was fine and the phonetic writing was great! The "choreopoem" style, however, made it hard for me to relate to and connect with the characters and made the plot a little hard to follow. It was worth it to read such a classic book, but I would not pick it up again.
