The plot of the book was fine and the phonetic writing was great! The "choreopoem" style, however, made it hard for me to relate to and connect with the characters and made the plot a little hard to follow. It was worth it to read such a classic book, but I would not pick it up again.

This was not the book for me. It was an almost painful read, not because of the stories being told, but the formatting made me scowl. Guess I know what to stay away from now.

please read this

This play made such a big impression on me after I saw it , I immediately went out and bought the book. It is a powerful piece on being an African-American woman in this country in the latter part of the twentieth century. I can hear this voice in my head from that evening at the theater. It sounded like, "For ColoredGirls ...who have ConsideredSuicide...whenthe Rainbow... Is Enuf." The lyrical quality of Shange's prose/poetry has stayed with me for many years.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of reading poetry (because you have to read it aloud to enhance your experience, but then my throat gets dry so that's annoying), but I gave this book a try. Mostly because 1) it's a play and I love theatre and 2) the book centers Black women. Those are pretty valid reasons, imo. However, my lack of interest in poetry didn't make "for colored girls..." one of my favourite books. I feel like I have to see a production of the play to appreciate it more. I am still in love with the title, tho.
