I checked this audiobook from my local public library. I have been procrastinating on reading it because of the scene with the children being dangled out of the window. I watched the movie first, and that image still resonates with me.
However, since I have a two-hour commute one way, I felt that now would be a good time to be entranced by Shange, and I must say that I was. I cannot believe how talented she is. She entraps you inside almost every emotion and feeling that women encountered, as they journey through life. Shange chooses the language within the text to articulate power, beauty, anger, happiness, and so much more.
I hate to admit that the stories of the seven women are very familiar. Why? I have either experienced the incident or know of a woman or women, who have experienced it.
Within this text, Shange captures what it means to be a woman and what it means to be a woman of color. Regardless of race, all women can relate to this text. Incidences of infidelity or abuse are well known to women. Shange's ability to capture the reality is amazing.

“my love is to magic to get thrown back on my face”
Three Thoughts:
1. A well deserved classic.
2. I would have loved to see this play live. I watched it on YouTube after reading the book and I am in awe.
I just know that I would be in tears if I was watching this in real time.
3. Tyler Perry is a villain & no one should’ve allowed him to create the movie version of this book. Full stop.

This was really a new genre for me. The cover of my book bills it as a choreopoem, a term with which I was unfamiliar. After reading the book, though, the term makes sense. There is such a rhythm and pulse to these words, they almost demand they be spoken aloud.
The poems are not titled within the work, but rather blend one into another. Many of these poems are captivating, and so many of the lines from Shange's poetry rang in my head long after I had closed the book. I would dearly love to see a performance of this, to get a better feel for the theatrical aspect of the choreopoem, and how the movement marries the poetry to create a performance.

This poem had such an amazing influence on my life. I performed the lady in red for a monologue my senior year in high school and later on at a domestic violence workshop.
The poetry format drew me in and took a lot of concentration to follow. Some parts I could follow, others offered me insight into experiences difficult to understand. Gorgeous cover art.
