I enjoyed how complementary Phoebe's and Mackenzie's journeys were.
The story is rough on both of them and not everything they say or do is nice or even okay. Visaggio shows the intensity of teenage girlhood without making excuses for their behaviour. Still, it's not all terrible: Phoebe has a great relationship with her father and Mackenzie gains a great friend she can confide in.
I think it portrays one real experience whilst not getting too lost in all the usual clichés you might find when it comes to "learn how to be feminine" type of stories - some elements lean into this but I found the art offers enough space for all of the characters to be more than just window dressing.
