EVERYONE WAS SO MEAN TO PHOEBE!!!

I’m really glad Phoebe decided to carve her own lane in the end. And even though Mackenzie was pretty awful to Phoebe, I did enjoy their friendship and I’m glad they managed to work things out.

Very cute, somewhat serious book about the trials and tribulations of being a teen trans girl in high school. Phoebe encounters the worst kind of transphobes; the ones that pretend to be your friend. Everyone in the book ends up making some stupid mistakes, saying some hurtful things, but in the end, just being yourself is what sets Phoebe free. I did really like that she decided to remain single at the end on her own terms, her own choice.  Take what I say with a grain of salt, though, as I am not a trans girl. A great graphic for teens, especially queer teens.

beautifully coloured & illustrated, obviously. wasn't as feel good as i would've like, at the end i felt that
phoebe had no one who was truly on her side since the beginning, i wish that maybe the surfer had been more explicitly a friend? it was disappointing that the guy who was her first friend & connected with phoebe on something nerdy turned out to be awful.
as casually accepting as it was transphobic. i felt weird about two non-lesbians using the d-slur... but anyway i loved the shifting dynamics, very interesting. i had a lot of fun, i would read like ten more of these!

DID NOT FINISH: 24%

This is not for me - I have liked some YA graphic novels but this one just read way too young and the friend group accepting and warming up to Phoebe right away felt incredibly forced and odd.

This is perfect for teens who are obsessed with Webtoons. I’m glad to see more graphic novels being made with teenagers in mind. The author and illustrator did a great job of capturing the complexities that come with this stage of life and relationships overall (friendships, romantic, familial). This is definitely one I’d give to 9th and 10th graders, in particular.
