This graphic novel was kind of weird. I don’t know why they had to say dyke so many times to get their points across, and the whole ‘all boys suck’ theme rubbed me the wrong way. Transitioning to one gender doesn’t make anyone who has the ‘opposite’ a horrible person. It also just felt kind of unrealistic

I know that this story was about Phoebe learning how to be a teenage girl, but sometimes the lessons being bestowed on her felt really didactic and info-dumpy.

This was unexpectedly questionable... There was such a disconnect for what I think was intended for this story to be to what we actually got... I get the message was probably something about defining your own self, making girlhood whatever you want it to be, but there were so many twisted conversations in this that I fear it could give the wrong ideas.

I don't think Phoebe needed to be friends with either Macca (who maintained a friendship even though it started on the foundations of wanting to teach her how to be a 'real girl') or Ben (who clearly displayed questionable behaviour after one date). Neither seemed like very nice people to me. In fact pretty much everyone felt terrible, with the crowd going with what was cool at the time, the slur d*ke just casually thrown around more than once... And okay... Maybe that could represent how callous school can be and yes the author is sapphic and maybe wants to reclaim the word, but it was left unaddressed and just came across weirdly to read.

Every time I thought Phoebe was finding her place some nasty thing would happen that just left me like... What the heck?

The only saving grace was the honest relationship with the surfer girl, the artsy kid sister and the gorgeous art style.

I don't know when it hit me, but there was definitely a turning point whilst reading this where everything just felt wrong and badly handled, unfortunately.
