THIS IS WHAT A SLOW-BURN SHOULD FEEL LIKE. 700+ pages of delicious tension that finally explodes and it earns it. I didn’t always follow the worldbuilding, but the characters completely pulled me in. Darien is a quiet, broody standout and an instant book boyfriend. Emotional, intense, and totally worth the ride.

Urban Fantasy, paranormal creatures, and Darien Cassel.
Characters: I wish I knew more about/bonded more with the characters. The author introduces us deeply to Darien Cassel - his emotions, insecurities, and issues are covered in great detail. He was perfection! Loren, on the other hand, fell flat for me, with her emotions only cycling between fear and jealousy. I needed more from the side characters, too. They didn’t receive consistent time in the story, more sprinkled here and there.
The pacing of this story varied from slow to medium pacing, back to slow. I stayed invested, but wasn’t at the edge of my seat.
I struggled with the plot at times. Events would occur between POVs, and sometimes there was a lot of redundancy, but at others I was confused how we got from point to point.
I really liked the world building. I wanted to visit this city (in the daylight of course) and see the square Loren loved so much. Each location was vivid and easy to picture.
There is spice in this book. I’d rate it 2 🌶️.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book. The narrators did a great job!
This book had some great tropes such as slow burn and touch her and 💀.
This is the first book in the series, so I understand there was a lot to introduce and setup. I loved Darien and I’m going to read book 2 in the series. I would recommend this book.
