3.25 ⭐️

There was a lot I did like about this book, but there were a few things that brought the rating down.

I LOVED Darien and all the devils! The found family aspect was amazing, and my favorite scenes were the ones at Hells Gate! I enjoyed the urban fantasy element with all the different species (witches,  werewolves, etc).

Personally, I wasn't a fan of Loren. She had her moments, but the entire book i was left wanting more from her. I understand that she's a human living in a magical world and feels powerless, but almost 800 pages of her being terrified of EVERYTHING was a little much.

I did love that she brought out the bedt in Darien, and im hopeful that in the next book, we see her come into her own a little more, and maybe make some better choices, LOL.

I also found it was about 300 pages too long. The main plot felt a little lost at times with how long the book was, and at times, it was hard to keep my attention.

I truly loved this book. The world building was detailed and as in depth as it needed to be to follow along. I’ve read other fantasy stories with powered characters and this one is different enough to set it apart from other fantasy stories. It’s a long read but I devoured the story and fell in love with the characters and couldn’t get enough. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

So many questions? Why would Darien bring the girls along on his missions? Fmc has the self preservation of an infant. There’s so many creature that aren’t well explained. Soooooo slow like I feel nothing has happened

Kayla Edwards had me from page one. Loren Calla is a human trying to survive in a city run by supernaturals. After a failed kidnapping leaves her best friend missing and a bounty slapped on her head, she winds up with Darien Cassel—the broody, morally grey, infuriatingly hot leader of the Seven Devils (aka supernatural bounty hunters). Instead of cashing in on her, he decides to protect her. Lucky her… or maybe not, since trying not to fall for him is a full-time job.

📢Attention: Darien Cassel has entered the book boyfriend chat. He’s moody, dangerous, stubborn, and yet somehow the softest when it comes to the people he loves. He's all the things that make up my favorite type of book boyfriend.

“Who are you, her boyfriend?” “I’m Darien f*cking Cassel.”

Let’s be clear—this is a slow burn. And by slow, I mean painfully slow. These two go back and forth on their feelings for each other and drag it out for almost 90% of the book. Yes, there are spicy scenes sprinkled in, but the real payoff doesn’t come until the very end. Worth it? Absolutely. Torturous? Also yes.

The worldbuilding sucked me right in, the side characters
(looking at you, Max and Dallas 👀)
added so much, and the narration mostly worked—though I’d beg Wen Ross to retire his “woman voice”. Zura Johnson carried the team with her stellar work.

The only downside for me was the takedown of some of the bad guys—it felt a little anticlimactic,
especially when it came to Darien’s father.
I wanted more buildup and payoff there. Still, this book is a solid 4 stars for me. Now, excuse me while I dive straight into book 2!

It somehow managed to keep moving despite feeling like nothing was happening. It wasn’t boring, but it was uneventful. I kept wondering when the plot was going to really pick up. FMC was bland, MMC was tortured, relationship was codependent. I have a feeling that once I move on I’ll completely forget what this book was about.

The pace is too slow. I was bored. The only thing between them seems to be lust and I’m not into his belittling, impatient, crappy treatment of her

This pulled me in. It was soooo good. I loved Loren and Darien’s story. I’m already starting the next book. There is so much depth to this world and the characters
