Reminded me why I like Larson’s work so much. I liked the themes - boy girl/childhood friendships, music loving, becoming friends with friend’s sibling, finding yourself, etc. etc.

Kids. Music. Teen angst. Summer fun.

Friendships change. In adolescence, and otherwise.

Here, Bina is bummed that her primary friend, Austin, isn't going to be around for a big part of the summer. She bonds with her guitar, gets to know his sister, has some escapades. Gets a little closer to figuring out who she is, and who she wants to be.

Solid Larson. Illustrations inside are black, white and orange. The Telgemeier kids who are aging up a bit will eat this with a spoon.

A look at the growing pains of middle school - what happens when your lifelong best friend gets accepted to a camp and is going to be gone for a month between 7th and 8th grades? Hope Larson does a good job of looking at how upside down life can get when things outside of your control are moving faster than you can wrap your head around.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book and chose to review it. This in no way impacts my opinion.

I really enjoyed this one! I loved the story, the growing pains, and the friendship! I just wish there had been more colours in the panels and that the panels made a bit more logical sense for reading order in some places. Otherwise I really enjoyed this graphic novel and I would recommend it if you haven't preordered it yet! A full review will be up on Books and Ladders!

Reading 2020
Book(s) 115: Camp by Kayla Miller and All Summer Long by Hope Larson

Get excited for two graphic novel reviews coming at you. Both of these on a few lists of graphic novels for middle grade readers, though as you will see I dispute some of the reviewed ages.

Camp is another graphic novel by Miller, reviewed Click in July and will read the next book, Art, when I can get from the library Camp picks up with the main character Olive going to summer camp for the first time. Willow is going to camp with Olive, and she is homesick from day 1. She clings to Olive, and does not want to share her with anyone. Olive gets a bit annoyed with her friend. Can they work this out and have a fun camp experience? This was a cute graphic novel, I enjoyed this one. Reviewed for grade 3 and older. I would agree that, even though Olive is in middle school, younger kids would enjoy this book as well. My rating 4 ⭐️.

All Summer Long is the story of Bina and her best friend Austin. Austin is off to soccer camp for a few weeks, Bina feels lost without him and their summer game. She has to figure out summer life without her bestie, and navigate some other tough hurdles. Bina finds friendship with Austin's sister and learns some valuable lessons. This book is reviewed for 4th grade and older. I think that this is more suited for a middle school library. Bina and Austin have finished 7th grade and are entering into 8th grade. Austin's sister is experiencing boy problems, and other high school type things. My rating 3 ⭐️. Previously reviewed Compass South, another Larson book earlier this year. I enjoyed that book more than this one. Though I will also read the sequel to All Summer Long once my library hold comes through.

What a perfect summer graphic for middle schoolers. It doesn't have any of the over the top mean girl drama. It doesn't have any weird romance crap. It does have a rocker main character who has to deal with the real changes that teenage summers bring like your best friend being weird and ignoring you. It feels real and fun without being melodramatic & has a nice message about being you.

Nice artwork and a pretty simple story about a 13-year-old girl on summer break. Friendship woes and aspiring musical dreams fill it up for the most part. A quick read that younger fans of comics like Smile will enjoy.
