More like a 3.5. The first half was a 4, second half was a 3.

10/10 recommend the audiobook

If you love "Jane Eyre," and you have a dark sense of humor this is the book for you.

Lyndsay Faye shows us what may have happened to Jane Eyre had she said, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

One of my favorite lines is in the middle of the book when Jane Steele is have a particularly tough time dealing with her circumstances -- some not her fault; others, well --- . Anyway, the line is, "I supped on gin and melancholy."

I received a copy of this book from the publisher to prepare for an author interview, which can be found at http://wesb.com/on-demand.

Jane Steele has blown Jane Eyre out of the water. Jane Steele is a 19th century heroine for the 21st century.

I have become OBSESSED with Lyndsay Faye’s writing style! The way she blends history and present day is captivating, and her character development is bar none! I fell in love with Jane Steele and her life’s story, the murder, the mystery, the no-fucks-given attitude. I couldn’t put this book down from the very start and I will GLADLY reread this time and time again (which can’t be said for all my books)!

Jane Eyre is my all-time favorite book. When I heard about Jane Steele on a podcast, I was naïve & bought it without researching it. Not my usual style at all. I was completely open to a variation on the Bronte story. I knew Jane Steele was supposed to be a serial killer; I presumed it was a dark tale about murder.
I wish I knew Lyndsay Faye's version was farcical before I began reading. I could have saved myself a lot of eye rolling. Lyndsay Faye notes in the Afterward that it is a "satirical riff". A reader like me would have appreciated that detail beforehand. However, it will make for something light if you are recovering from a book hangover.

This was a fun fast read. I picked it up on the premise that it was a retelling of Jane Eyre, but (for me at least), it wasn't. I could removed all of the Jane Eyre references and lost nothing from the story - it was an enjoyable read in and of itself.

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite novels, and that's saying something since I hate most classics. So when I saw that Jane Steele was inspired by Eyre, I jumped at the chance to read it. And I certainly wasn't disappointed. This isn't a retelling whatsoever and our heroine is amazingly kick-ass. I loved the incorporation of Sikhs and the fact that the romance was a side story to the main action. Highly recommend this one, whether or not you've read Jane Eyre.

This was great. I loves the references to Jane Eyre. Jane Steele is an amazing character and very well developed. She's strong but thinks she's undeserving of love.
