This book is both brilliant and disturbing. I would have been happy with a Jane who's main concern was getting back to her childhood home, and schemed to do only that. The characters who inhabit Highgate House when Jane returns as an adult are fascinating to no end. Having Jane with so much death on her hands is not terribly appealing to me. There's more than one way to be made of steel. I have to say, though, that this is a truly unique take on the "Jane Eyre" story.
After the first 100 pages, I really thought I would love this book. For the rest of the first half, I was convinced it would be a 5 star read. After that though, it went downhill. I think I really liked the characters and the writing style, but the second half of the book was dedicated to a mystery that I was completely uninterested in and I think because I wasn't invested, it lost me completely.
As I said, the characters were good. I liked the world and the premise that was explored in the first half, but after that it lost its way.

I found this novel captivating. I'm a fairly big fan of Jane Eyre from my childhood, so the similarities between Jane Eyre and this novel made it all the sweeter.
The novel is about Jane Steele, telling her tale in an autobiographical format, much like the heroine of Jane Eyre. Jane Steele, like Jane Eyre, grows up an orphan in a home in which she is not loved, is sent to a brutal school, has a period of destitution, and accepts work as a governess for a master which she ultimately grows to love. Jane acknowledges these similarities between her life and that of Jane Eyre, except for one large difference; Jane Steele is a murderess five times over.
I look forward to more work from this author.

1.5 stars - I didn't like it.
It was not horrible or painful by any means, but nor was it engaging. DNF’d at 65%. From now on I am going to make an effort to set aside a book if I am still not interested in or not caring about what may develop, by the time I reach the ½ way mark. Life’s short, my TBR pile is not.
-------------------------------------------
Favorite Quotes: Some tragedies bind us, as lies do; they are ropes braided of hurt and bitterness, and you cannot ever fully understand how pinioned you are until the ties are loosened.
First Sentence: Of all my many murders, committed for love and for better reasons, the first was the most important.

I listened to this on audiobook and loved it! Great spin on the Jane Eyre story. If you like "retellings" of classics (this isn't exactly a retelling, but that's how it's marketed and you'll see the Jane Eyre story in Jane Steele) or you enjoyed the general premise of Jane Eyre but thought the book was a little dull, you might enjoy this one!
Great!
I have enjoyed Faye's literary contributions and her latest does not disappoint. Through the rich characterization and thoroughly engaging narrative, this book was a delightful read.

I had the most enjoyable time rooting for Jane Steele the morally light grey hero. I loved every character, every plotline, every reveal, every murder. Never has a book had me actively care about the romance like this book did.
