Happy Place

Emily Henry

4.06 AVERAGE

Emily Henry writes compelling characters which take root in my heart quite easily and Happy Place was no exception.

This story is told from the point of view of Harriet, who hasn't been together with Wyn for 6 months now but neither of them can bear to tell their closest friends the truth.

When they're invited to THE COTTAGE for one last friend gathering before it's sold, Wyn and Harriet decide to pretend they're still together for the sake of the group.

I love how this story focuses on not just romantic relationships but friendship and how things change as you get older. Happy place is a really appropriate name for the story as well as it explores just what your happy place is.

Terrible ending. Could she not just have become a family doctor in Montana? I’m sure those are needed and would have been less pressure. Wouldn’t a pottery studio want to hire someone with more pottery experience? Also the lack of communication between 6 adults was pretty annoying.
hopeful lighthearted medium-paced

“This is how I used to think of love. As something so delicate it could't be caught without being snuffed out. Now I know better. I know the flame may gutter and flare with the wind, but it will always be there.”

HOW WAS THIS BOOK EVEN BETTER THE SECOND TIME I READ IT!!!!!!! it’s seriously safe to say this is my comfort book. the found family, the love story, the happy place

3.5! Disclaimer, this was my first Emily Henry book, so I'm not sure how this book compares to her other writing!

That said, this was enjoyable and made me want to read her other work. From some of the reviews I've read it seems like this one is a bit more polarizing than her other books, and I thought this book was solid, so I'm sure it only goes up from here?!

I loved the whole second chance at romance trope, I loved their dynamic. I also enjoyed all of the tension at the beginning. The story itself wasn't boring or anything. Everything was fine. Just that really, fine. The friend group was annoying to me. They seemed like such codependent immature adults. I've also seen some reviews complain about how depressing the themes in this book are but that didn't bother me. But just know that coming in that this isn't a light hearted romcom.

Thanks Libro.FM for the ALC!

The best EH so far.

I found the pacing of this book really frustrating because it was so slow to begin with and only picked up in like the last 100.
But those last 100 were good

this may be an emma first! one of the first times i've read a romance book and actually been invested in the characters and the fact they're actually good for each other and NEED to be together!!! how rare!

i thought the story has a cute way of doing the fake-dating trope, as well as creating a believable backstory for the characters relationship that actually made me love both of them a lot. i was sympathetic to both of their struggles and i was equally invested in both of their lives, instead of normal where i tend to only care about the narrator. and they weren't toxic for each other! yay!

i love that emily didn't make either of these characters unlikeable or one-dimensional; instead you found yourself rooting for both of them and fully understanding the motivations for their actions.

towards the end i really thought she was gonna have them stay broken up, so i was ;(. turns out i was wrong and i just had to wait for the quite satisfying ending.

the last emily henry i read was 'the people we meet on vacation' which i read last summer and thought was a yawnnnn, so it's nice to see her work has gotten exponentially better.

hooray for fun, light romance that helps me turn off my brain and think about happy things!!
