cosmoknights is a surprisingly delightful and adventurous romp w/ a simple yet notably effective story told through a good narrative style and amazing art.

my most fav thing abt this comic is hands down its art, specifically its landscape and sky scenes that couldnt be more befitting of a galaxy-wide science fiction story. they're simply stunning and breathtakingly cinematic, and i had to pause on countless pgs to simply marvel and absorb the awesomeness of the color of the sky or galaxy; it's the kind of pretty that makes one realize why some ppl are gaga over planets and the universe. the art for the characters are great as well, esp considering the joust costomes and the countless action scenes where they still look fluid and full of movement, never is there any awkwardness or stiffness.

the story is surprisingly simple yet fun, the premise executed well and seamlessly thru the narrative, effectively blending traditional elements w/ great breaking-the-norm story choices. i like the queer characters and how the story turns the princess trope on its head in many ways. however, i think the jumps between chapters can be too either too sudden or smooth, as in no chapter breaks are even detected. i also wish more was elucidated on the world (galaxy?) - for instance how the jousts came to be, why there are that many princesses to be won, how big is the whole system - and the themed explored w/ even more nuance.

i rly do better w/ science fiction in graphic novel + comic forms..to sum up, this is a fun, adventurous comic w/ a simple yet engaging story and world(s). if anything, it should be read even just for the breathtaking scenery art alone.

First things first, the artwork is gorgeous. The colour palettes, the character designs, the cosmoknights’ power armour, the backgrounds – it’s all just spot-on. Even the sound effects are well-integrated. The pacing is rather brisk for the most part but quiet/tense moments are allowed to breathe.
I don’t have too much to say about the story because honestly it’s quite simple. I worried the feminist critique was a little too simplistic and bordering on naïve, but Kate came along to say exactly what I was thinking:

the protagonists’ intentions are noble but by participating in the games they’re only ever operating within the patriarchal system rather than dismantling the system altogether for true liberation.

Like YES thank you! I’m glad (and surprised!) that point was brought up and I’m curious to see how the story develops from here.

This is very much the first book in a series. It does a great job of establishing the world and the characters but there isn’t a whole lot of payoff in this volume. It’s setting up for a sequel, which I look forward to reading when it comes out.

Cosmoknights is a great story with a top tier pun of a name. I like they way Hannah Templer used and subverted classic sci-fi and romance tropes so the readers were kept on our toes. I also really loved how well Bee and Cass even each other out. Characters in a role that directly supports the big hero, like Bee, often end up being somewhere one dimensional. Bee was far from it with the intriguing hints about her and Cass's respective pasts peppered throughout the novel. Cass's motivation to help the princesses being empathy, rather than chivalry was a refreshing twist. I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed it from beginning to end. The cliffhanger in the last few pages has me on the edge of my seat waiting for volume 2.
