ohhhhh i loved it so much. at first you're like hmm this lady is kind of detached and maybe sucks but i like her anyway? but the more i learned about her the more i liked her.

i was set to be disappointed when
they were going to have her institutionalized and she'd accepted everything was in her head and then it wasn't! i was so glad it was real.

I really liked this twisted on the haunted house narrative. Fully ready for it to be the usual "buy house, find out it's scare, leave or destroy it". Then it jumps to 4 years after them buying it and boom, she's still there just "dealing" with the monsters.
It was gonna be a 5 star but it did go from subtle to unsubtle with its haunted house as
domestic abuse allegory
which left it with nowhere to escalate about halfway through.
That said, it did do one of my favorite things which is
skirt the "everything has a reasonable explanation" trope and go full throttle into the supernatural.

It took me 2 tries to get into the book. It felt like the first half of the book was so slow and a lot of it felt kind of like a “so what” sort of set up. The main character feels relatable in how she just doesn’t seem to gaf about what is going on in the house. I think the second half of the book really picks up and actually pulled me in.
I was a bit convinced there for a bit that this was somehow all something she had imagined but wasn’t too upset with Hal’s death given how he had treated her. Even if she claimed things were getting better
I thought the ending was a bit cliche but finished up the book fairly well. I will note that the writing about the domestic violence was a bit of a shock and should have been flagged as a note somewhere as a warning. Those parts were very hard to get through.
