I couldn’t put it down, but truthfully this book needed some editing. Some parts really dragged on and slowed down some of the most dramatic action in the story. But, overall a compelling and twisty horror novel.

Nur so viel: ich hatte viel Spaß und dies ist eine ganz wunderbare Variante einer Geisterhausgeschichte.
Man muss sich ein bißchen einlesen, um die Stimmung zu verstehen, aber spätestens dann ist es einfach gut.

I got partway through this book and realized that rather than a fun book about a woman living in a haunted house, this was going to end with the big reveal that she was crazy and had murdered her husband and the ghosts were a representation of this. Hooray, I love stories where women are crazy (sarcastic). So I slogged through the rest of the book, adoring Margaret’s relationship with the various ghosts and her frustration at trying to keep the house clean for Katherine’s sake while simultaneously dreading the reveal where we discover that she is the one who has been moving things around and no one else has ever seen anything supernatural in the house. Can you imagine my absolute GLEE at the ending of this book??? I was over the moon. Thank you, Carissa Orlando, for playing with audience expectations and delivering a legitimately unique and haunted house story!
This book is AMAZING. Best book I've read in a while. It was everything I wanted and more. The narrator did an absolutely fabulous job. I would recommend listening to this to anyone who enjoys a good haunted house story.
This book was loaded. I was expecting kinda a straight forward, somewhat quirky, haunted house story. This is what I have heard a lot of people tout this book as. This was not the case. There are really heavy themes in this book.
I found Margaret to be a pretty frustrating narrator. She is unreliable, downplays everything, and seems to have a reason for everything. In fact, midway through the book, I was finding her minimizing SO frustrating, I considered DNFing the book! I'm really glad that I didn't though because the more you read, the more you see just how broken she is and just how much she has gone through that has made her this way.
This book is creepy, gory, sad, stressful... overall, a great read for October.
