During the pandemic, all three daughters have returned to the farm to help out, and in the process, Lara tells the story of her short-lived acting career and the summer she dated Peter Duke. The play, Our Town, plays a significant role in this book, and I mistakenly thought it was written by Ann Patchett for far too long. I do think if I had read or at least been familiar with the play, I would have gotten a lot more out of this book.

The family dynamic is playful and reminds me a lot of Little Women. As more of the story is revealed, we learn about how Lara and Joe meet and how the farm came to be. Each of the daughters has a distinctive personality that comes through vibrantly through the text. This is a quiet story with well-developed characters and a powerful story.

I'm trying to think of something smart to say, but words escape me. All I can think of is how this book feels like a heartbreak, how it heals you from it, because there is life after a heartbreak, and that life can be good, how it can be enough. This is a book about the life I could get if it were enough for me. Maybe that's where the heartbreak is. All I can say is that this has been the best book I've read this year. Ann Patchett, the writer that you are.

DID NOT FINISH: 49%

Got bored.

DNF @70% - I tried so hard to like this but was just so bored. The reminiscing about Lara’s time in the play and her acting years were just so boring to me and I wanted to hear more about the family. The writing is beautiful but I just couldn’t get past how bland the rest of the story was, this was just not for me unfortunately
