Started reading because of the manga, and now, we have the anime adaptation!
Feeling like a Cinderella story during Meiji (probably) with a twist of supernatural, I felt Miyo was the most miserable Cinderella I had ever read. And the horrible people around her, especially her father, who does nothing to protect his daughter. What kind of family is this?
As usual, the prince will come to the rescue. In this case, her fiancee. Kiyoka didn’t sit well for me at first, but he redeemed himself pretty fast. So, I am curious how they will get along in the second book.
Her sister and the uncle were a piece of shit. Let's just say that I hope all the rotten human beings will not appear in the next story. And I am happy for Miyo to get people who support and love her.

This was a wonderful read. Poor Miyo has been through so much, so watching her find love and come into herself just a little in this was wonderful.
I truly cannot wait to read more.
I truly cannot wait to read more.
I see what the girlies are talking about with this!!
I loved that so much and I can’t wait to read more of their story. It was a nice pacing and I love that they established they’re into each other. I can tell Miyo is gonna just become stronger as a person, she’s already so likeable!
Onto vol 2 ☻

Alright so volume 1 is the precursor to a phenomenal tale and lovely wholesome love story. Miyo, our FL, is being mistreated and abused by her so called family. The abuse runs deep and I love the emphasis that a simple sorry and dowry would not be enough to heal those wounds.
I’m a sucker for falling in love at first sight stories so this one got me on page one. Having said that I was rooting for that childhood friend for a good minute before I dropped him for Mr.Kiyoka Kudou.
I’m satisfied with the childhood friend’s ending in the relationship. As sincere as his feelings for Miyo were, his flaws prevented him from truly being there for her. He knew his shortcomings very well also considering he quickly got Kudou when things were going south. He basically forfeited the challenge before it started.
I love the fantasy laced into the story. It’s the sole reason why Miyo was abused in the first place. The magic is what connects her to her memories and dreams of her mother (happier times). It’s not as prominent in this volume but I’m sure we’ll see more of it later on. Especially with that foreshadowing at the ending as Miyo bids her mother’s cherry tree goodbye and steps towards her new life.

I’m not too happy with the anime adaptation. As beautiful as it is, there’s just so much not emotionally available in the scenes being portrayed. The inner workings of the characters and Miyo’s struggles with social interactions and herself shapes a lot of the story. It feels kind of silent throughout the episodes as we continue to watch without a ton of her inner monologue. I’ll be staying up to date with the anime as it posts but I highly recommend reading the novel over watching it at this point in time.

Akumi Agitogi's My Happy Marriage basically begins as a Cinderella-type story: since her parents' arranged marriage ended with her mother's death, and her lack of magic powers was revealed, Miyo has become a servant in her own home, abused by her mother and sisters. It becomes convenient for her father to marry her off, so she's sent to Kiyoka Kudou as a potential bride. Living with him, she slowly begins to wish she could stay, while knowing she's not really a suitable bride.
Her shyness and anxiety is pretty well-done, as is Kiyoka's slow realisation that he's becoming fond of her -- his coldness at first is revealed to be shyness, lack of understanding of how to handle other people (or at least women), and tiredness of being forced to play the marriage game. I think the pace is a little quick, but it's lovely to see them both come out of their shells, and I did believe in Miyo's quick attachment to one of the few people to ever treat her kindly.
The fantasy backdrop is interesting too, with gifts running in families which help to combat Grotesqueries, creatures made of human fears and superstitions. Kiyoka is a high-ranking soldier who handles Grotesqueries, and the hereditary nature of the powers provide some political/social motivation to Miyo's family and other interested parties.
I'm interested to see where it goes, particularly as I think it's being hinted that Miyo does have some kind of gift.
