I was genuinely surprised how much I loved this book. I listened to the audiobook which was read by…Matilda?? Added bonus. This book somehow combines revenge plot / origin story and horror. There were some truly eerie moments that I LOVED.

Let me tell you, I cried. I'm still crying. This book was so beautiful and moving, while retaining dry humor throughout. Every bit of it was unexpected. WTNV and its novels are all delightful, but this is on another level. It is a wonder of narrative and characterization. It brought to bare a new understanding of Night Vale, of the eldritch comfort it offers.

Maybe I'm being a tad harsh as haven't listened to the podcast for a few years now, but the Faceless Old Woman intrigued me hugely.

Review coming soon.

I didn’t expect this book to make me breakdown into tears, but by golly, it did. I read Welcome to Night Vale, but this book felt much different to that.

Alternating between modern day, where the faceless old woman seems to indirectly direct Craig’s life down an invisible path and the 1800s where we become more familiar with her origins, this is a special and unique tale.

Narrated by the old woman herself, we get a clear picture of a strong, complicated female protagonist. There are pirates, revenge plots, Night Vale Quirkiness, and so much more. I loved it.
