I think this is a fantastic MG novel. The world of Wreathenwold is brilliant, and there's a good mix of mystery and humour the whole way.

this unique take on the Minotaur/labyrinth story invokes not only Grimm’s Hansel/Gretel, but the dark and dangerous elements of their tales. The magic, the use of poppets (creepy + cool), the card wielding color-anchored economy, the character growth, the sad and horrifying realizations, the incredible peril…I could go on.

Know that it is even cleverer than it lets on at the beginning, so good!

For Auxier, Pullman, & Hardinge fans for sure.
Also: that cover; and there are illustrations inside.

I loved this middle-grade portal fantasy - the setting was immersive, the poppets were fun, and the characters had depth and interesting backstories.

The world is quite dark and delves into more serious topics
(divorce, grief)
, but amidst that, it is also very fast-moving and funny.

I’d recommend it to people who enjoy interesting fantasy worlds and tales of family and friendship, wrapped in an exciting plot.

I don’t usually read middle-grade, but this has made me want to change that. I’m looking forward to delving into the second book!
