The Whisperwicks: The Labyrinth of Lost and Found is a dark fantasy novel by Jordan Lees that takes us on an engaging tour throughout the eerie world named Wreathenwold. At the beginning of the book, there is a boyish boy whose name is Benjamiah Creek and who dwells with his parents above their bookshop. Everything was quiet until the day a mysterious doll came and swept him into a labyrinthine world of danger and mystery.
.
Wreathenwold is a nightmare landscape in which even routine tasks can become a passport to losing oneself forever. It is even more unsettling because of the shadowy figures known as the 'Hanged Men', who uphold a sort of grim order in this world. After getting connected to the perilous world, he is tapped into, Benjamiah encounters a plethora of characters that help or hinder his quest. At the heart of the plot there are themes of loss and grief, from the personal issues afflicting lead character Benjamiah to the more global challenges faced by the people of Wreathenwold.
.
The plot is interesting, as the story goes off under the impetus of Benjamiah in quest of the secrets of Wreathenwold and the disappearance of his brother, Edwid. He is joined by Elizabella, a strong-willed girl who has sustained her own loss, and together they overcome many trials. It has a nice, steady pace with tension merging into emotional depth at the right places.
.
Lees' world-building is vivid and clear, with an image evoked of haunting beauty and dangers within Wreathenwold. Although drawing from familiar elements of classic and modern fantasy, it wrenches open an identity that belongs all on its own. The characters are well-crafted, though facilitating some familiar character archetypes, to further flesh out the plot.
.
It's a good read for dark fantasy lovers in which one can be quite sure of really remarkable journeys through vividly imagined worlds. Though it has its imperfections, it stays a worthy story of courage, curiosity, and the lasting power of stories. The illustrations add a layer.

I enjoyed this book for what it was. I do think it gets better as you continue reading. Small things mentioned play bigger parts in the story later which I love about a book. I hated the character names though. Benjamiah??? Pick a struggle. Either Benjamin or Jeremiah! Jordan Lees did this multiple times with names. Terrible.

A genuinely very fun and touching read. I can easily say this will likely be one of the best books I’ve read this year.
